Activity 15:
Mini volley game
Activity summary
This fun mini volley game encourages players to practice quick reactions, soft hands and controlled volleys whilst moving, aiming to keep the ball in play while challenging their partner with the placement of their shots.
Activity setup
- This activity is done in pairs, each player with a racket and 1 ball between 2 suitable for their ability.
- Set out a square, about 2 m × 2 m.
What to do:
- Players start at opposite sides of the square and must volley back and forth whilst moving between the two cones.
- The ball must stay within the marked zone, and players must stay between the two cones at their end of the square.
- Start cooperatively, with players trying to get as many continuous shots as possible.

Coaching Tips
- Keep a low, stable stance with feet shoulder-width apart, ready to move in any direction.
- Relax the grip and control the racket face to guide the ball rather than forcing it.
- Keep the swing short, prepared early and controlled, focusing on accuracy over power, tracking the ball at all times.
- After each shot, return to a strong central position, ready for the next volley.
Make it easier
- Allow the ball to bounce or use a bigger ball.
Make it harder
- Time trial: see how many consecutive volleys the pair can achieve within a set time.
- Make it a competitive game by introducing a halfway line. Volleys must land on the other side of the court without being returned to win the point.
Safety
Remember, you can use the STEP framework – Space, Time, Equipment, and People – to adapt any activity, making it easier or more challenging to suit your players.
Always check that there's enough space for everyone to take part safely, and make sure all under-18s are wearing protective goggles during the session.
