Activity 40:
Side to side volley challenge
Activity summary
This activity helps players work on their forehand and backhand control. It can be done individually or as part of a circuit (space permitting).
Activity setup
- Done individually, with a racket and ball suited to the player’s ability.
- Player standing centrally between the two side walls.
What to do:
- Drop the ball and hit forehand to one side wall, aiming to have it rebound to the opposite wall and bounce in front of you.
- Then hit backhand to the other side wall, alternating walls to maintain the volley pattern.

Coaching Tips
- Track the ball so impact aligns roughly with your front foot.
- Transfer weight through the shot, alternating right/left foot and forehand/backhand.
- Follow through straight, then recoil racket ready for the next shot.
- Control height and pace to maintain consistency.
Make it easier
- Hit off both walls separately without returning—practice forehand then backhand individually.
Make it harder
- Challenge to complete 20 repetitions.
- Add wall targets and aim to hit them a set number of times.
Safety
Remember to use the STEP framework—Space, Time, Equipment, and People—to tailor any activity for your players.
Always ensure there’s enough space to participate safely, and that under-18s wear protective goggles.
