Activity 8: Continuous volley wall challenge

Activity summary

This cooperative activity aims to get players volleying against a wall to mimic the shot in a game. It can be used as a stand-alone activity, or as part of a circuit.

Activity setup

  • This activity is done in pairs, each player with a racket and 1 ball between 2 (suitable for their ability).
  • Players need a suitable wall for the rally.

What to do:

  • Players play a cooperative rally using the wall, trying to volley it back and forth between them, alternating shots.

Coaching Tips

  • Track the ball closely and stay on the balls of feet to be able to adjust positioning and timing.
  • Maintain a relaxed grip and try to absorb the ball’s impact for better control.
  • Focus on a short, compact swing, hitting the ball at waist to chest height.
  • Keep the racket face open for more lift and control.

Make it easier

  • Allow the ball to bounce rather than volleying.

Make it harder

  • Add in a challenge, such as making 10 shots in a row.
  • Put in a condition of only forehand for one player and backhand for the other.
  • Step further away from the wall so players have to use even more control and judge the pace of their shot even more.
  • Could do balancing on one leg.
  • Get players to perform the activity using a corner, volleying off two walls.

Safety

Remember, you can use the STEP framework – Space, Time, Equipment, and People – to adapt any activity, making it easier or more challenging to suit your players.

Always check that there's enough space for everyone to take part safely, and make sure all under 18s are wearing protective goggles during the session.
