Activity 67: Attacking throw game

Activity summary

This competitive throw game challenges players to score points by throwing the ball so their partner can’t catch it after one bounce—teaching movement and tactical placement.

Activity setup

  • Pairs (or groups of 4 in quarters) with one ball and a centre throw-down line.
  • Players start ~2 m apart facing each other, line between them like a halfway line.

What to do:

  • Player bounces the ball in their half so it lands in partner’s half.
  • Partner lunges to catch one-handed before second bounce; then throws back.
  • Continue rally; score a point when opponent fails to catch before bounce.

Coaching Tips

  • Stay on the balls of your feet, centrally positioned for quick movement.
  • Engage your core to maintain balance and stability when catching.
  • Vary placement—use angles and deception to create catching difficulty.

Make it easier

  • Use a sponge ball; allow a two-handed catch and let ball land then catch.

Make it harder

  • Require racket-hand only catches.
  • Allow players to bounce the ball off walls for unpredictable angles.

Safety

Use the STEP framework—Space, Time, Equipment, People—to adapt difficulty.

Ensure a clear playing area and that under-18s wear protective goggles.
