Activity 32:
Solo corner volleys
Activity summary
Players practice solo corner volleys, focusing on accurately volleying into the front corners. Aims to improve racket control, footwork, and precision while maintaining smooth, controlled volleys.
Activity setup
- Done individually in a court corner (needs two walls).
- Each player needs a racket and ball suitable for their ability.
What to do:
- The player hits the ball so it hits both walls, then volleys it back in the opposite direction, ensuring it strikes both walls again before the volley.

Coaching Tips
- Adjust the racket face to control angle so the ball hits both walls at the desired height.
- Move quickly into position, directing the shot towards the walls’ target area.
- Keep a relaxed grip for controlled touch, allowing light bounces off both walls.
- Focus on smooth follow-through and early racket preparation for consistency.
Make it easier
- Remove the racket: throw the ball at the two walls to learn angles and bounces.
- Allow single-wall practice: hit forehand then collect before next volley.
Make it harder
- Increase distance from the front corners to demand greater accuracy over longer range.
Safety
Remember, you can use the STEP framework—Space, Time, Equipment, and People—to adapt any activity, making it easier or more challenging to suit your players.
Always check there’s enough space for everyone to participate safely, and ensure any under-18s wear protective goggles during the session.
