Coaching the lob

Learn the fundamentals of coaching the lob.

What is a lob?

A lob is a high, arcing shot that sends the ball deep into the opponent’s backcourt, usually aiming to land close to the back wall. This can be straight or cross court, from front and back of the court. Use it to:

  • Reset the rally, giving time to recover to the T.
  • Diffuse pressure when forced into a defensive position.
  • Move the opponent to the back of the court, opening up space to attack.
  • Disrupt an opponent's rhythm by varying the pace of the rally.

Coaching points

  • Grip: Keep a relaxed grip for a softer shot rather than excessive power.
  • Racket preparation: Open racket face with low racket preparation.
  • Swing and follow through: Strike under the ball (low to high swing), following through upwards to generate lift.
  • Height: Aim for the ball to hit high on the front wall.

Potential challenges

  • Hitting too low: Emphasise the racket face angle and follow through.
  • Lack of depth: Encourage lifting through the ball, aiming high on the front wall. Use targets to help.
  • Too high and deep: Adjust swing power and encourage lifting of the ball, rather than hitting it with too much power.
  • Hitting out on the side wall: Adjust the angle of the shot (where it hits the front wall) - try using targets.
  • Not bending the knees: Encourage softer knees, bending at the knees and not the waist, to get under the ball.
