What is controlling the T?
Controlling the T means maintaining a strong position near the centre of the court, where the short lines intersect. This is the best spot because it allows quick movement to any part of the court, putting the player in an attacking position and forcing the opponent into a more reactive game. Use it to:
- Make retrieving shots more efficient.
- Apply pressure on the opponent by being in the best position to volley.
- Create attacking opportunities by giving you access to all shot options, controlling your opponent.
Coaching points
- Recover quickly: Move back to the T after every shot.
- Stay on balls of the feet: Keep a balanced, active stance with a slight bounce.
- Positioning: Adjust slightly depending the rally (higher on the T for attack, deeper for defence).
- Volley when possible: Take shots early to deny the opponent time.
Potential challenges
- Leaving big gaps on the court: Encourage players to return quickly to the T area and avoid standing too deep (around the service box).
- Getting caught behind the opponent: Encourage players to hit the ball deep when they need to regain control of the T.
