Create a collaborative code of conduct
Most clubs have a code of conduct, but have you created it collaboratively? Involve your members or group in creating your code of conduct or club charter.
When members help set the values and expectations, they feel more accountable and committed to following the rules. It promotes ownership and ensures the values align with what everyone wants.
Tip: Gather input from players, coaches, and volunteers to make it a shared effort.
Set clear expectations from the start
Clearly communicate what behaviours are expected from day one. This isn't just about rules - it's about the overall tone, commitment, and respect in the club.
Keep expectations consistent with regular reminders.
Tip: Revisit your code of conduct periodically to keep everyone aligned.
Lead by example
As a leader, your actions set the tone for the group. Show respect, fairness, and positive communication to inspire others.
Tip: Praise good behaviour and address poor behaviour in a constructive way.
Keep communication open
If (or when!) behaviour issues arise, address them promptly and constructively.
Focus on understanding the cause and offer solutions for improvement, rather than criticising the person. A simple 'check in' to see what's going on with that person can go along way to helping find a resolution.
Tip: Provide specific feedback in private, focusing on actions rather than the individual - outline the changes you need to see.
Reinforce positive behaviour
Recognise and praise good behaviour to encourage others. Positive reinforcement boosts morale and motivates everyone to stay on track.
Tip: Use praise, rewards, or small gestures like social media or player of the week or month shout-outs to celebrate positive actions like effort, commitment, or helping one another.
