The active listening mindset

Use this powerful tool to understand, engage, and respond to your players.

What is active listening?

Active listening is a communication technique where you focus fully on the speaker, process what they're saying, and respond thoughtfully. It shows your players that their thoughts and feelings matter, creating a positive environment where they can thrive.

Why active listening matters in coaching

  • Builds trust: Players feel heard and respected, strengthening your connection and mutual respect.
  • Enhances performance: Understanding players' needs helps you tailor your coaching to help players develop.
  • Fosters a positive environment: Players are more likely to be open and engaged when they feel supported.

5 steps to master active listening

Active listening sounds obvious, but often, especially as a coach, we are used to imparting knowledge, rather than listening. It takes practice, but here are our top tips to get you started!

1. Be present

Turn off distractions - put your phone away and make eye contact. Show through your body language that you're full engaged - avoid crossing your arms or putting your hands in your pockets.

2. Ask open-ended questions

Encourage players to share more by asking them questiongs like "How are you feeling about today's session?"

3. Reflect and paraphrase

Repeat or rephrase what has been said to confirm understanding. If a players tells you they're frustrated they're not improving, say something like "It sounds like you're feeling stuck and want to see more progress. Let's figure out how we can get there together."

4. Read between the lines

Notice players' tone, body language, and emotions. Sometimes what isn't said is just as important as what is. Understanding this will help you to respond appropriately to support players.

5. Provide feedback and support

Acknowledge and validate feelings, offering constructive feedback when warranted, for example I understand that you're frustrated. Let's try giving you challenges to focus on the areas you want to improve.

Quick tips for busy sessions

With a big group or busy session, it's not always possible to have in-depth conversations with everyone. We totally get it! You've got limited time and resource to go around.

Take time to simply ask players "how are you feeling today?" or ask them what they've been up to. You can do this before, during, or after the session - try not to rush off after a session - a quick chat at this stage leaves a lasting impression.

Even in a fast-paced environment, taking 10 seconds out to actively listen to a player will make a difference.

Final thoughts

Mastering active listening isn't just a skill, but a mindset. By making it part of your coaching approach, you'll empower players to grow both on and off the court, and ensure everyone feels valued and heard.
