Activity 57: Cooperative bounce game

Activity summary

Players form a circle with one in the middle; they work together to hit the ball in and out of the circle, ensuring a bounce between every shot to practice control and teamwork.

Activity setup

  • Group of 5+ players, each with a racket and one sponge ball shared.
  • Players stand in a circle with one player in the middle.

What to do:

  • Middle player hits the ball out to an edge player—ball must bounce once.
  • Edge player hits back to middle, ensuring one bounce between every shot.
  • Continue until all players have hit or the ball bounces more than once between hits.

Coaching Tips

  • Track the ball closely and stay on the balls of your feet for adjustment.
  • Engage your core for stability; avoid overreaching in lunges.
  • Maintain a relaxed grip and absorb impact for control.
  • Use a smooth swing height and finish follow-through toward your target.

Make it easier

  • Begin with a simple throw-and-catch version.
  • Allow the ball to bounce more than once.
  • Use a sponge ball.

Make it harder

  • Middle player may hit to anyone except the feeder to keep players on their toes.
  • Compete against another team for most consecutive shots or first to a set number.

Safety

Use the STEP framework—Space, Time, Equipment, and People—to adapt any activity for your players.

Always ensure there’s enough space to participate safely, and that under-18s wear protective goggles.
