Activity 28:
Racket catch
Activity summary
In this activity, players try to catch the ball softly on their racket strings without it bouncing, a technique that helps control a ball hit hard. It can be stand-alone or part of a circuit.
Activity setup
- This activity is done individually, with a racket and ball each suitable for the player’s ability.
What to do:
- In a suitable space, the player throws or taps the ball up and catches it softly on their racket without it bouncing.
- Perform first forehand catches, then switch to backhand catches.

Coaching Tips
- Keep the grip soft (not too tight).
- When “catching,” slightly drop the knees and soften the racket face.
- Maintain a soft wrist and elbow to cushion and absorb impact.
Make it easier
- Allow the ball to bounce once on the racket before catching.
Make it harder
- Instead of throwing the ball up, flick it off the racket and then catch it.
Safety
Remember, you can use the STEP framework—Space, Time, Equipment, and People—to adapt any activity, making it easier or more challenging to suit your players.
Always check that there's enough space for everyone to take part safely, and make sure all under-18s wear protective goggles during the session.
